Elderly people have acquired knowledge through experience, and our students could benefit from this. In this service learning unit, students will get to know an elderly person in their community and will use technology to help this person tell his or her story. These digital stories will then be posted on-line and will be available for viewing at the local public library and nursing homes in our area. Sixth through eighth graders in the technology (STLP) club will be conducting interviews in pairs at a local nursing homes or assisted living facilities.

I love this idea! I think so many young people do not respect their elders the way they should and allowing them to get to know them personally and about their life is a way to show them they are valuable people with so much information. Doing this through a digital story is a great way for the kids to have so much fun while doing this!
ReplyDeleteThanks! We have a lot of kids who live with their grandparents, and I think this might help them bridge generational gaps.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I might adapt this for 4th grade and use it as a Grandparents' Day activity. We also a have a lot of students who live with grandparents. What an excellent way to bring generations together and to foster respect for your elders!
